Calibrated State — Toronto
What We Do
Calibrated State works with high performers who operate where expectations and pressure are constants.
Professional athletes spend years mastering both the physical and cognitive demands of their sport, and executives make decisions that shape the lives and direction of everyone around them. In both worlds, performance is visible and consistently measured. What rarely gets the same attention is the biological foundation required to sustain that output.
Under sustained load, capable people instinctively revert to brute-force effort. They push past what is sustainable, then hesitate at the exact moment steadiness is required. They usually deliver, however they do so at a compounding cost.
The nervous system plays a vital role in how performance holds under pressure. When Performance Load™, the total internal demand the nervous system must sustain at the moment execution is required, exceeds capacity, execution becomes unreliable.
Talent is what an organization acquires. Performance is what the athlete's internal system allows through. Those two things are not always the same.
The Edge Protocol™, the Restorative Sleep Protocol™, and the Cognitive Reset Protocol™ each address a specific dimension of that gap. The work happens at the level most performance support is not designed to reach.
The Framework
Performance Load is the total internal demand the nervous system must sustain at the moment execution is required, independent of the task being performed.
When Performance Load exceeds capacity, execution becomes unreliable.
Cognitive Demand
The processing demand placed on the brain in real time, shaped by how much must be evaluated, how quickly, and under what degree of uncertainty.
Emotional Weight
The psychological pressure a moment generates when expectation, consequence, and identity meet at the point of execution.
Nervous System State
The readiness of the nervous system entering the moment, shaped by the quality of recovery between demands.
Performance Load™
Performance Load ↑ → Nervous System Capacity ↓ → Execution Breakdown
When Performance Load exceeds capacity, execution becomes unreliable.
The point where execution becomes unreliable is where Calibrated State begins.
You may be experiencing Performance Load if
You can still perform, but everything takes more effort than it used to.
You wake up tired despite getting enough sleep.
You find yourself reacting to situations that once felt manageable.
You know more is available to you than you are currently accessing.
You feel successful on the outside, but increasingly depleted behind the scenes.
You haven’t stopped performing. You’ve simply lost some of the capacity that performance depends on.
The Protocols

Elite Athletes
Stabilizing execution under pressure.
A structured mental performance program designed to stabilize execution, accelerate recovery, and protect long-term capacity in high-stakes competitive environments. Built for elite and emerging athletes operating under sustained pressure.
The Edge Protocol is built around six sequences. Together they form a complete internal performance cycle, moving an athlete from pre-game readiness through execution and reset, into genuine structural recovery. The sequencing is deliberate and each one builds on what came before.
Individual sessions are also available for targeted work at any point in the season.
What Athletes Often Notice
Greater consistency when the pressure rises.
Better access to skill, instinct, and decision-making when it matters most.
Less overthinking and more trust in preparation.
A stronger sense of confidence rooted in preparation rather than outcome.
Faster recovery after mistakes, setbacks, and difficult moments.
Improved ability to stay present and execute one play, one shift, one possession at a time.
“Before we started working together, my biggest opponent was my own head. If I made one mistake out there, that was it. I’d dwell on it and suddenly one small mistake would turn into three more. I was constantly derailing my own performance because I just couldn’t let things go. It was incredibly frustrating knowing I had the physicality but was constantly getting hijacked by my own nervous system when the pressure was on.
Going through the Edge Protocol completely changed how I operate during competition. You taught me how to access a flow state and regulate myself, rather than just hoping I’d have a good mental day. Now, when a mistake happens, I can process it, drop it, and immediately move on to the next play without hesitation. I am incredibly grateful for the work we did together. I’m a way better player now, and I honestly never expected to go through such a massive transformation.”

Sleep is the foundation everything else is built on.
A structured seven-week program addressing the conditions that determine whether sleep genuinely restores the system or merely passes time. The RSP works at the level of the automatic patterns that govern sleep onset, continuity, and depth — the patterns that conscious sleep hygiene advice cannot reach.
Sleep is not a recovery strategy. It is the biological foundation that determines whether recovery is possible at all, and whether the physical and cognitive demands of training and competition can be sustained without compounding cost.
What People Often Notice
Falling asleep more easily and returning to sleep more quickly when awakened.
Improved energy, patience, and emotional resilience throughout the day.
Waking feeling more restored and mentally clear.
Greater confidence in their ability to sleep instead of worrying about sleep.
Reduced nighttime mental activity and anticipatory thinking.
A sense of feeling like themselves again.
“For almost three years, I lived in the shadow of a 2:00 a.m. heart attack. Every night, my body relived that trauma, waking me at that exact hour in a state of panic. I tried everything to break the cycle — including sleep medication — but nothing worked.
Finding the Restorative Sleep Protocol was the turning point I desperately needed. Kelly’s methodology helped me retrain my mind to recognize that I was safe. The transformation was steady and verifiable: Month 1, my Fitbit data confirmed that my deep sleep had increased from four hours to 5.5 hours. By the end of the program, I was averaging six hours of restorative sleep per night.
Beyond the metrics, my daily energy levels and overall mood have improved dramatically. The Restorative Sleep Protocol didn’t just help me sleep — it helped me reclaim my life.”

Senior Leaders & Executives
Recovery and recalibration for sustained performance.
A science-based recovery and recalibration program for leaders operating under sustained Performance Load™. Designed to protect decision-making capacity, restore mental clarity, and build the internal foundation that peak performance depends on.
The leaders who find this work most useful are the ones who function well on the outside but know that something has shifted internally. The margin has narrowed. Their best thinking requires more effort than it used to. Recovery between demands is not what it was.
Individual sessions are also available for targeted work during high-stakes periods or transitions.
What Leaders Often Notice
Clearer thinking during periods of sustained demand.
More energy, capacity, and presence at work and at home.
Better decision-making late in the day and under pressure.
A renewed ability to perform without feeling constantly depleted by performance.
Less mental noise and greater focus on what matters most.
Improved emotional regulation during difficult conversations and high-stakes situations.
“I spent years thinking that running on constant stress was the price of admission for my role. It was ingrained in me. What I didn’t realize was how compromised I was until I stopped trying to power through it. Before working with Kelly, my patience was zero. If someone brought me bad news or a major project was derailed, my immediate reaction was frustration, and sometimes I would blow up. I was highly reactive and always exhausted at the end of the day.
Getting a good night’s sleep was the beginning of the domino effect that gave me my brain back. The mental clarity I have now is night and day. There are still stressful days, but my reaction is very different. It’s hard to overstate how much lighter and more capable I feel now.”

Why Calibrated State Exists
Over three decades supporting CEOs, senior leaders, and high-performing professionals, I noticed a pattern.
The people struggling the most were not the least capable. In many cases, they were the most capable.
They had the experience and the intelligence. They had the work ethic and they knew what to do. Yet something was getting in the way of consistent execution.
Decisions that once came easily required more effort. Recovery became less reliable. Sleep stopped restoring what the day demanded. Performance remained outwardly strong while the internal impact continued to rise.
The problem was access and not a lack of capability.
The version of themselves they trusted most was becoming harder to reach under sustained pressure. That observation became the foundation for Calibrated State.
Today, I help leaders, athletes, and other high performers create the conditions that allow preparation, skill, judgment, and experience to remain accessible when they are needed most.
Because performance is never just about talent, training, or knowledge.
Beneath every performance is a state.
About Kelly May
Kelly May is the Founder of Calibrated State and the creator of Performance Load™.
For more than three decades, she has worked alongside CEOs, senior executives, entrepreneurs, and leadership teams, gaining a unique view into the realities of sustained performance.
Throughout her career, Kelly became increasingly interested in a question that traditional performance conversations often overlook: Why do highly capable people sometimes struggle to access what they already know, possess, and are capable of under pressure?
That question became the catalyst for Calibrated State.
In addition to leading Calibrated State, Kelly serves as Chief of Staff at PEO Leadership, a national community of CEOs and senior executives. This ongoing work keeps her closely connected to the challenges, demands, and expectations facing today’s leaders.
Today, Kelly works with athletes, leaders, and high performers who want greater consistency, capacity, recovery, and access to their best when it matters most.
